Soft Tissue Injury
Injury to the ligaments, tendons and fibers of the body that connect the skeletal bones.
General damages
Better known as "pain and suffering" damages, which include the emotional trauma from physical injuries, pain, humiliation, etc.
Disfigurement
A technical term in workers' compensation cases for a serious and permanent scar to the head, neck, or face.
Ambulatory Surgery
Ambulatory surgery refers to previously scheduled surgical and nonsurgical procedures performed on an outpatient basis in a hospital or freestanding ambulatory surgery center's general or main operating rooms
Punitive damages
Also called exemplary damages, which are designed to punish a defendant whose behavior in causing the plaintiff's injuries was especially egregious.
Unintentional Injury
Two categories of unintentional injury: motor vehicle-related injuries and home and recreation related injuries.
Burn, third degree
A burn in which the damage has progressed to the point of skin death. The skin is white and without sensation.
Quadriplegia
Complete paralysis of the body from the neck down, usually caused by damage to the spinal cord.
Tinnitus Ear Ringing
Together with other abnormal ear noises, ear ringing is medically called tinnitus. Buzzing, roaring, and pulsitile sounds are sometimes perceived when no sound is present in persons with tinnitus.
Traumatic Brain Injury
Serious injury to the head often resulting in severe and permanent damage to the brain. A bone may break or fracture when the force applied against it is greater than the strength of the bone itself.
